For people looking for a smaller, friendly dog, the smaller Spaniels are often a great choice. Many of them have similar characteristics, which can make it a bit of a challenge to narrow down your options to just one breed. In fact, even breeders have that problem, which is why you'll often see Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies for sale and Cocker Spaniel puppies for sale by the same kennel. Of course, no dog breed is perfect, so these dogs do have flaws.

Cockers are one of the breeds that used to be too popular. For several years, there was a big problem with the breed's formerly wonderful temperament and the term Cocker Rage was coined. Luckily, the breed has almost recovered from this issue and Cockers are once again the same bouncy, loving animals they once were. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a bit less exuberant, but just as devoted to their people.

Cockers can be prone to separation anxiety, especially if the family is very busy and leaves their dog home alone frequently. A second dog can help with the problem in some cases.

While both these dogs are Spaniels, their flaws are quite different. Cockers are yappers, while Cavaliers tend to be quiet, unassuming little dogs. On the other hand, Cockers are very smart and eager to please, which makes them easy to train, while Cavaliers are sometimes very obstinate.
